Moving past the emotional debate to compare what can be compared

Since PrestaShop announced its layoffs, discussions about the future of merchants using the platform have swung between two extremes. On one side, those pushing Shopify as the only modern answer. On the other, those defending Odoo as the sovereign alternative. Both camps have arguments. And both often miss the real question for the merchant: does the solution functionally cover my needs, and at what real total cost?

This article offers a functional comparison based on our field experience migrating PrestaShop shops. The goal is not to impose a truth, but to give the right decision criteria to a business leader who has to decide within the next 12 months.

Functional comparison: Shopify vs Odoo in 2026

Online store and customer experience

On the core business — the pure online store — both solutions are mature today.

  • Shopify: exceptional checkout (one of the best on the market), premium themes, high native performance, a very rich marketing app ecosystem, native integration with the main tracking and advertising tools.
  • Odoo 19: the Website Builder has crossed a decisive threshold. Advanced drag & drop, Lighthouse performance comparable to the best competitors, well-thought-out SEO, native integration with standard analytics and marketing tools. Modern Odoo shops no longer lag behind Shopify visually.

Verdict: equivalence on the pure store for 90% of cases. Shopify keeps a slight edge on the top-tier checkout and the gallery of ready-to-use premium themes.

Product management

  • Shopify: solid catalog, variants limited to 100 per product (limit lifted on Plus), metadata via third-party apps, complex product configurators requiring paid apps.
  • Odoo: catalog with no variant limit, very flexible native attributes and options, complex product configurators possible without add-ons, native management of kits, packs, rental products, subscriptions, and industrial configurable products.

Verdict: clear advantage to Odoo as soon as you move beyond the standard product with simple variants.

Inventory and logistics management

  • Shopify: basic Shopify Inventory, multi-warehouse included but limited, transfer management via third-party apps, WMS integration via paid specialized apps, no native production management.
  • Odoo: unlimited multi-warehouse, advanced replenishment rules, built-in MRP for production, native lot and serial number traceability, barcodes and RF terminals included, location management and picking strategies, native carrier integration.

Verdict: no comparison possible. Odoo plays in a higher league as soon as logistics management goes beyond the dropshipping or single-warehouse e-commerce model.

Accounting and French tax compliance

  • Shopify: no native accounting, paid connectors to Pennylane, Sage, Cegid, etc. French compliance systematically delegated to a third-party tool. Preparation for 2026 e-invoicing via third-party apps. FEC not native.
  • Odoo: complete native French PCG accounting, compliant FEC, Factur-X and preparation for 2026 e-invoicing built in, OSS VAT for intra-EU sales, DEB/DES declarations, multi-company and consolidation included, automatic bank integration.

Verdict: a decisive advantage for Odoo for any merchant who wants to integrate e-commerce with accounting without a third-party connector.

B2B sales

  • Shopify: Shopify B2B available only on Shopify Plus (high pricing tier), limited customer account management, customer-specific pricing conditions via apps, quotes and negotiation outside the standard workflow.
  • Odoo: B2B and B2C coexist natively in the same installation, customer price lists, payment terms, customer accounts with receivables and credit limits, quotations with validation workflow, built-in e-signature, complete customer portal.

Verdict: Odoo handles B2B natively at every size. Shopify forces you onto Plus as soon as you want to do serious B2B.

CRM and marketing

  • Shopify: basic Shopify Email, Shopify Audiences (only with Shopify Payments), CRM via third-party apps (Klaviyo, HubSpot, Mailchimp), marketing automation via paid apps.
  • Odoo: complete native CRM, marketing automation, email marketing, SMS marketing, multi-channel campaigns, advanced segmentation, lead scoring, sales-marketing integration in the same tool.

Verdict: Odoo natively covers what requires 3 to 5 SaaS subscriptions on Shopify.

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over 5 years

Let's take a concrete case: a French merchant, €3M annual revenue, 20% yearly growth, B2C with a small B2B activity, 2 warehouses, 8 business users.

  • Shopify Plus + apps + accounting connectors over 5 years: Plus subscription at about $2,500/month, essential apps about $800/month, transaction fees outside Shopify Payments depending on mix, accounting connector and integrations $600/month. Cumulative 5-year estimate: between €350k and €500k depending on volume and options.
  • Odoo Enterprise + hosting + integration: 8-user license about €200/month, Odoo.sh or sovereign cloud hosting about €300/month, initial integration and customization €60k to €120k amortized over 5 years, ongoing maintenance €1k to €2k/month. Cumulative 5-year estimate: between €180k and €280k depending on functional ambition.

Verdict: Odoo offers a TCO 30 to 45% lower than Shopify Plus over 5 years for a merchant of this size, with an equivalent functional scope.

Four typical migration cases from PrestaShop

Our field experience shows that PrestaShop merchants fall into a few typologies. Here are the migration paths we observe.

Case 1: the B2C pure player, single country, single brand

Profile: €500k to €2M revenue, catalog of 200 to 2,000 SKUs, small team, outsourced accounting, moderate European ambition.

Recommended path: Odoo if the accounting-inventory-sales integration challenge is significant or if B2B looms in the medium term. Shopify remains defensible if the business stays strictly B2C, single-country, with no logistics complexity.

Case 2: the mixed B2B/B2C merchant

Profile: €1M to €10M revenue, sales to individuals and businesses, multiple price lists, frequent manual quotes, a sales team dedicated to B2B.

Recommended path: Odoo, systematically. The B2B need requires Shopify Plus on the Shopify side, which aligns costs with Odoo, and Shopify cannot natively handle B2B/B2C coexistence with the required level of granularity.

Case 3: trading with physical stock and logistics

Profile: €2M to €50M revenue, several warehouses, complex inventory management, carrier integration, barcodes, traceability, sometimes production or assembly activity.

Recommended path: Odoo, without hesitation. Shopify is simply not designed for this scope, and stacking third-party logistics apps creates operational fragility that is unacceptable at this scale.

Case 4: the DTC brand with strong marketing needs

Profile: €1M to €20M revenue, strong branding, polished customer experience, active community, marketing performance at the center, sometimes international marketplaces.

Recommended path: this is the only case where Shopify remains relevant, provided you accept the total cost and the lock-in. Odoo is technically capable of handling this profile today, but the marketing app ecosystem remains richer on the Shopify side. A decision to weigh according to the priority given to sovereignty and business integration.

Odoo 19 e-commerce: what changed in 2026

For a merchant who hasn't looked at Odoo for 2 or 3 years, the solution has evolved a lot. A few major new features in version 19:

  • Performance: product page load times halved on large sites, native Core Web Vitals optimizations.
  • SEO: fine-grained management of Open Graph tags, Schema.org structured data, automatic URL redirects, multi-language sitemaps.
  • Website builder: new library of e-commerce blocks, native animations, advanced video integration.
  • Checkout: redesigned purchase journey, simplified steps, fewer abandoned carts, native integration of the main French and European PSPs.
  • Marketplaces: Amazon, Cdiscount, ManoMano, Mirakl connectors, native or via OCA.
  • PIM (Product Information Management): management of enriched product sheets, media, translations, integrated into the catalog.
  • Analytics: native e-commerce dashboards, customer cohort tracking, RFM analysis, performance reports by channel.

Our methodology for migrating from PrestaShop to Odoo

An e-commerce migration is not just transferring data from one database to another. It is a transformation project that touches sales, logistics, accounting and marketing.

Our approach is built around four key phases:

  • Business scoping. Audit of the existing setup, data mapping, identification of specificities to reproduce, prioritization of critical features. This is where 80% of a migration's success is decided.
  • Design and development. Odoo configuration, custom development, data migration, connector integration (carriers, PSPs, marketplaces, accounting). Systematic preservation of the organic search ranking earned on PrestaShop through URL redirects.
  • Testing and training. User acceptance testing on complete business scenarios, team training, integration validation.
  • Go-live and stabilization. Go-live planned outside critical commercial periods, intensive post-launch support, helping teams toward autonomy.

Typical total duration: 4 to 8 months depending on the complexity of the scope.
