What's new in Odoo 16: what the version changes for you
Odoo 16 bet on speed and new applications. Today the real question is when to leave it.
Here are the new features of Odoo 16 by business area: accounting, sales, inventory, manufacturing, human resources and reporting. Each point is translated into a gain for your teams.
You then see where support for this version stands and how to decide between staying and migrating, without rushing and without nasty surprises.
What did Odoo 16 change in your daily work?
Odoo 16 mainly sped up the screens you use all day. The list, kanban and form views were rewritten with the OWL framework. The result is smoother navigation in the back office and on the online shop.
The version also opened new ground. A knowledge base application, dashboards built on the spreadsheet engine and a single loyalty programme for every channel arrived with it.
Rich text fields can now be edited by several people at once. The command palette gained new actions. On compliance, searching personal data by email or phone and merge rules for duplicates make GDPR work easier.
Both the Community and Enterprise editions of the version have open code. Some applications remain Enterprise only, such as Knowledge, Sign, Documents or full accounting.
What gains by area with Odoo 16?
Six areas, each with the benefit first.
Accounting: reconcile faster
Bank reconciliation is rewritten with a new matching screen. Multiple analytic plans replace analytic tags. You can add a credit limit per customer.
Sales: one loyalty programme
Coupons, promotions, gift cards and e-wallets run through a single programme shared across Sales, Point of Sale and eCommerce. Delivery status shows on the order.
Inventory and purchasing: fewer handlings
Transfers group by contact, carrier or country. Calls for tenders compare supplier offers in a single screen. The Sendcloud connector covers European carriers.
Manufacturing: plan with visibility
You split and merge manufacturing orders. An overview shows lead times and availability. Dependencies between operations and the master schedule can be imported and exported.
Human resources: recruit better
Skills flow in from recruitment and resumes are read automatically. Interviewers only see applications for their own position. Onboarding plans exist per department.
Knowledge and dashboards
A knowledge base of nested articles with collaborative editing. Dashboards with gauges, indicators and global filters built on spreadsheets.
Where does Odoo 16 support stand?
Odoo 16 has not received security fixes for a long time. Odoo 20 is out. Odoo 19 is the previous version and the most widely deployed. Odoo 18 remains supported. The publisher maintains the three latest major versions: yours is no longer one of them.
- Odoo Online and Odoo.sh: the platform requires a supported version. An Odoo 16 database must migrate and the schedule is set with the host.
- Dedicated server: the database keeps running. You choose the date but no security fix arrives any more.
- Third-party modules: many are no longer published for this version. Bank connectors and carriers are hit first.
An online shop, a customer portal or payroll data call for a short-term migration. An internal database behind a VPN leaves more time. In every case, planning beats enduring.
Stay or migrate? Four steps to decide
1
Audit
List installed modules, custom developments, third-party modules and interfaces. The volume of custom code sets the duration.
2
Scoping
Choose the target. Three jumps lead to Odoo 19 and four to Odoo 20. For each custom module: port it, replace it with standard or drop it.
3
Dry-run cut-over
Replay each jump on a copy. Check accounting, inventory and open documents. Have your key users sign off.
4
Go-live
Switch over in a quiet period. Your teams are trained on the screens of the target version.

Frequently asked questions about Odoo 16
The questions Odoo 16 users ask.
No. It has not received security fixes for a long time. Only Odoo 20, Odoo 19 and Odoo 18 are maintained by the publisher.
The Knowledge application, spreadsheet dashboards, the unified loyalty programme, the new bank reconciliation, multiple analytic plans and the reworked calls for tenders. A general speed gain comes on top, thanks to the rewritten views.
On Odoo Online and Odoo.sh, no: the platform requires a supported version.
On a dedicated server, yes: the database keeps running. The risk depends on how exposed the database is and how sensitive the data is. We advise planning the migration.
Three jumps to Odoo 19 (17, 18 then 19) and four to Odoo 20. Your users only discover the version you arrive on.
From Odoo 17 onwards the look of every screen changes. Processes stay the same but a short familiarisation is needed. Project tasks also gain states and the Notes app becomes To-do.
Many are no longer published for Odoo 16. For each one we check whether it exists for the target version or whether standard now covers the need. This often lightens the database.
Yes. From Odoo 18 onwards the /odoo prefix is used by the back office. Public pages located under that path must be moved during migration.
