Odoo is an all-in-one suite to run your business (sales, purchase, inventory, accounting, e-commerce, projects…). Two editions coexist:
- Community: free and open; you keep control of hosting and updates. The gaps compared to Enterprise can be partly covered by OCA modules.
- Enterprise: same foundations, with more comfort, more modules and publisher support.
The real question is not "which one is best?", but "what do you need now… and tomorrow?"
1) The essentials
- Move fast, limit surprises, non-technical teams → Enterprise.
- Independence from the publisher, in-house control, lean scope → Community.
Simple image: same car. Enterprise comes with GPS and maintenance included; Community runs very well if you handle the maintenance (or entrust it to a good mechanic).
2) What changes day to day
- Ergonomics: similar visual base. The difference lies in the tooling (wizards, Studio, mobile, IAP, ergonomics) that makes Enterprise easier to adopt.
- Functional: Enterprise offers more ready-made modules (advanced accounting, manufacturing, quality, maintenance, helpdesk, field service, planning…).
- Updates & support: Community relies on your partner/team; Enterprise includes publisher support and a well-marked upgrade path.
3) Costs
3.A Licenses
| Edition / Plan | What you pay | What you get | Hosting included | Custom modules | Support & updates | Who is it for? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Community | €0 / user / month | Odoo base (open edition) | No (your responsibility / partner's) | Yes (free development) | No (via partner/team) | Priority on independence and in-house control |
| Enterprise – Standard | €/user/month (per price list) | All apps | Yes (Odoo Online) | No (otherwise → "Custom") | Yes (publisher) | Go fast without customization, non-technical teams |
| Enterprise – Custom | €/user/month (per price list) | All apps + Studio + API + multi-company | Yes (Odoo Online) or No if On-prem / Odoo.sh | Yes if not on Online | Yes (publisher) | Need for flexibility, integrations and scalability |
Reminder: if you choose Odoo.sh, its hosting cost is added to the licenses.
3.B Hosting (if you do not stay on Odoo Online) — with built-in alternatives
Three paths, from the most "turnkey" to the most "sovereign".
1) Odoo Online (SaaS) — included with Enterprise licenses
- For those who do not want to manage the infrastructure.
- Ideal if you stay close to standard (little or no customization).
2) Odoo.sh (official PaaS platform) — on top of licenses
- For those who want customization without building the whole DevOps machinery.
- Brings dev / stage / prod environments, backups, CI/CD, logs, easier deployments.
Odoo.sh price list (hosting only — based on your screenshot)
- Worker: €48.00 / month
- Storage: €0.16 / GB / month
- Staging environment: €12.00 / month / env.
- Formula: 48 × nb_workers + 0.16 × GB + 12 × nb_staging_envs → €/month (×12 for annual)
- Example: 1 worker + 1 GB + 3 envs. = €84.16 / month ≈ €1,010 / year
3) Alternatives to Odoo.sh
- Ofleet.cloud (managed PaaS for Odoo): Odoo-focused alternative, duplication, backups, flexible deployment (including on your cloud).
- Self-hosting (on-premise or public cloud) + managed services: you choose OVHcloud, Scaleway, Hetzner, AWS, GCP, Azure… and a provider handles backups, updates, monitoring, security.
- "In-house" CI/CD: if you have a technical team, you can industrialize without Odoo.sh (pipelines, tests, backups).
Quick compass
- Turnkey & native Odoo integration → Odoo.sh
- PaaS flexibility / your cloud / broader governance → Ofleet.cloud
- Maximum sovereignty & optimized infrastructure costs → Self-hosting (+ managed services)
4) Examples to find your place
-
Trading / e-commerce SME
- "Classic" processes, little customization, desire to move fast → Enterprise Standard (Online).
- Complex transport rules, multiple integrations, need for test environments → Enterprise Custom + Odoo.sh (or Ofleet).
-
Industry / manufacturing
- Quality, maintenance, connected workshop, traceability → Enterprise Custom (less custom code to maintain, smoother upgrade).
-
Services & field interventions
- Planning, timesheets, helpdesk, mobile → Enterprise (ready-made modules).
-
Independence above all
- Control over hosting, a solid partner, reasonable scope → Community (or Enterprise Custom on-prem if you want publisher support).
5) Common mistakes (easy to avoid)
- Confusing free with inexpensive: Community has no license, but running it has a cost (hosting, backups, updates).
- Stacking customizations without rules → technical debt and difficult version upgrades.
- Forgetting operations: backups, security and monitoring cannot be improvised.
- Choosing on principle rather than by business use and team capacity.
6) Decision checklist (10 minutes)
- Goal #1: independence or speed/peace of mind?
- Simple or demanding scope (accounting, manufacturing, after-sales, multi-country)?
- Do I have an integrator/team for operations (or need all-inclusive)?
- Can I stay close to standard and limit customization?
- Licenses: Community (€0) or Enterprise (per user/month budget)?
- Hosting: Online (included), Odoo.sh (resource-based pricing), Ofleet/self-hosting (managed services)?
- Adoption: short training, views/favorites by role, useful dashboards?
Conclusion
- Choose Community if independence comes first and you have (or will have) the necessary operational discipline.
- Choose Enterprise (v19) if you want to move fast, reduce risk and benefit from publisher support and ready-made modules — with Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or an alternative depending on your need for flexibility.
In any case, keep licenses and hosting clearly separate in your budget, start simple, document your choices and keep a backup and update plan.
An ERP is not a totem: it is a tool. The right choice is the one that saves you time without trapping you later.
