Starting September 18, 2025 (release of Odoo 19.0), new customers hosted in the EU region will have all their backups (3 copies) stored exclusively in the European Union. For existing EU customers, a gradual rollout is planned through the end of Q2 2026. During the transition, one backup copy remains in Canada. Retention remains 12 months, and the policy is set per region and not customizable.
Background: why were we talking about Canada?
Until now, Odoo kept three redundant copies of each database, including one in Canada, to ensure intercontinental resilience (business continuity & disaster recovery). This was GDPR-compliant, notably through existing adequacy mechanisms.
But — you all asked for it with the delicacy of a DPO during an audit — Europe for Europe, please.
What changes
- From 09/18/2025 (Odoo 19.0)
New customers hosted in the EU region will have 3 backup copies all in the EU, spread across geographically distant datacenters (same level of resilience, fewer transatlantic suitcases). - Gradual rollout for existing customers (EU)
Transition to 100% EU backups by the end of Q2 2026. Until then, one copy remains in Canada.
Important: moving to Odoo 19.0 does not speed up this specific point, because pre-upgrade backups remain under the policy in force until they are purged (12-month retention).
What does not change
- Still 3 redundant copies, stored in separate datacenters.
- For non-EU customers: a copy in Canada persists for resilience.
- Changing region changes the policy going forward, not retroactively (old backups follow their retention for up to 12 months).
- Policy per region, not individually customizable (policy set per region and applied identically to everyone).
Practical consequences for companies in France/EU
- Compliance / DPO: backup residency becomes EU-only at the end of the transition — a simple argument to document in your record of processing activities and your DPIAs.
- Sensitive sectors (public sector, healthcare, defense, education…): this move eases sovereignty requirements and reduces "transfer outside the EU" discussions.
- Contracts & appendices (DPA): remember to update the "hosting / backups" section to reflect the timeline (end of Q2 2026).
- Continuity plan (BCP/DRP): the level of resilience remains unchanged (3 copies, separate sites), but all in the EU eventually: update your mappings and DR exercises.
Frequently asked questions
No. Odoo 19 triggers EU-only for new customers. For existing customers, it is a global schedule through the end of Q2 2026, independent of your upgrade.
According to Odoo, the policy is set per region and is not customizable. You can check/change region (impact from that change onward, not retroactive).
They follow standard retention (up to 12 months). During the transition, one copy may remain in Canada until expiry.
Check your hosting information and/or contact Odoo Helpdesk (and if you prefer, Auguria can assist with the diagnosis and documentation update).
