Recently at Auguria, we worked on a major Odoo project with a client, and the main challenge was migrating data from the legacy application. The dynamic data was often poorly structured or incomplete, making it hard to recover. The client insisted on bringing all of its data into the new application from the very start of the project.
Main challenge
The main obstacle was the lack of available staff on the client side to check and correct the data. As integrators, we could not take responsibility for this risky work. It was therefore crucial to find an effective way to handle the data migration without compromising the quality and reliability of the information.
Proposed solution
Separating the data
We split the data into two categories for an efficient migration:
- Static data: partners, products, etc.
- Dynamic data: quotations, orders, invoices, etc.
Strategy adopted
Initial focus on static data
- Concentrating efforts: By focusing our efforts on static data, we enabled a fast go-live of Odoo, giving users an efficient tool to start working with.
- Data quality: Ensuring the quality of static data was essential, as it forms the solid foundation for future operations.
Dynamic data migrated in a second phase
- Progressive import: Importing dynamic data after the initial go-live allowed us to deal with issues without delaying the project.
- Cleansing and validation: Setting up a cleansing and validation process for dynamic data with suitable tools and in collaboration with the client.
Tools and methods used
- Data audit: Analysis and correction of data before any import
- ETL tools: Use of ETL tools (such as Talend) to automate data extraction, transformation and loading.
- Testing and validation: Running pilot imports and involving key users.
- Training and support: User training and ongoing support after go-live.
In summary
Data migration in an ERP project requires a methodical, structured approach. By separating static and dynamic data and focusing on static data first, we were able to speed up go-live while guaranteeing a reliable and robust database. Dynamic data is then integrated progressively, minimizing risks and ensuring a smooth transition.
At Auguria, this approach allowed us to rise to the challenge and meet our client's requirements, while ensuring a smooth and efficient integration of the Odoo ERP.
